Mass Timber Pedagogy

Structural Basics

Structural

A clear understanding of structure is fundamental to designing with mass timber. The Structural modules introduce the core principles of wood as a structural material—examining how mass timber elements perform individually and as part of larger building systems. From material behavior and load paths to system-level performance and project constraints, these resources establish the technical framework needed to evaluate structural capacity and performance before advancing design decisions.

Structural engineering plays a significant role in the design, performance, economy, and material efficiency of mass timber buildings. This module introduces the foundational principles of mass timber structural engineering, from the behavior of wood as a material to the performance of mass timber structural components, both individually and as part of larger systems. Together, these topics establish the technical foundation for understanding structural capacity, performance criteria, and project constraints.

Target Courses: Structures, Studio

Delivery Method: Students use this presentation to understand the fundamentals of mass timber structural design

Building on Structural Basics of Mass Timber, this module outlines key factors to consider when approaching the design of a mass timber building. Efficient mass timber structural design benefits from an integrated, interdisciplinary process in which early decisions align design intent, code compliance, material performance, systems integration, and practical constraints, including cost and constructability. Building on the prior structural module, this multi-page resource will provide approximately 10 key factors to consider when approaching the design of a mass timber building, such as building code, building type, fire resistance, deflection, vibration, tolerances, fabrication, and construction.

Target Courses: Studio, Integrative Studio

Delivery Method: Students use the guide in the development of studio projects.
