Mass Timber Pedagogy
Curriculum Materials

2025

The Mass Timber Pedagogy resources are designed to help faculty integrate mass timber concepts into architectural education through flexible, evidence-based teaching materials that support a range of course types and instructional approaches. Developed for use across studios, structures, environmental building systems, and integrative design courses, the curriculum provides a framework for introducing wood as a contemporary, high-performance building material within today’s design and construction context.
Organized as a series of modular teaching resources, the curriculum supports scaffolded learning—from foundational concepts and technical fundamentals to applied decision-making and case-based analysis. The modules help students develop an understanding of material performance, structural systems, environmental impact, and project delivery considerations that shape real-world design outcomes.
Developed by leading experts in academia and professional practice the resources include lecture-ready presentations, technical guides, decision-making tools, case studies, and hands-on activities that can be adapted to undergraduate and graduate curricula. Rather than prescribing a single approach, the pedagogy is intended to help faculty incorporate mass timber where it naturally aligns with their existing teaching objectives, supporting critical inquiry and design exploration within architectural education.

November 8, 2025 | 11:00am-12:30pm | Fayetteville, AR Funded Research Workshop Securing research funding is critical for universities of architecture to expand knowledge, foster innovation, and address pressing global challenges. This session examines strategies for building a robust research culture, from identifying funding opportunities to cultivating partnerships with government, industry, and community organizations. Participants will consider how funded research supports faculty development, enhances student learning, and strengthens the impact of architectural scholarship on society. Presenters: |
November 13, 2025 | 4:00–5:30pm ET | Webinar Integrating Robotics and Artificial Intelligence into Architecture and Construction Workshop How can architecture leverage robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), and computational design to effectively respond to urgent challenges surrounding the building industry, such as climate change, labor shortages, equity, and inclusion? This lecture presents interdisciplinary research and case-study projects exploring this critical question. These projects introduce new modes of architectural production that integrate robotics, AI, and computational design to exemplify socially and environmentally responsible strategies for designing, planning, and constructing buildings and structures. Collectively, these investigations offer actionable insights into how digital technologies can enable resource-aware design and labor-conscious construction while simultaneously facilitating novel architectural expressions. Founded in 1912 by 10 charter members, ACSA is an international association of architecture schools preparing future architects, designers, and change agents. Our membership includes all of the accredited professional degree programs in the United States and Canada, as well as international schools and 2- and 4-year programs. Together ACSA schools represent some 7,000 faculty educating more than 40,000 students.
