Today’s physical world is becoming increasingly informed and shaped by the virtual and thedigital. Everyday activities are largely removed from specific edifices or gravity-bound sitesand increasingly managed through electronic gadgetry and websites. Depositing a check inthe bank once required carrying a piece of paper to a built structure, but now it is simply amatter of some finger taps and a photograph. As virtual reality and smart object integrationbecome progressively pervasive it will challenge the need or desire for distinctive, identifiableand unyielding physical space. Architectural form in the digital condition will not evaporatebut it will increasingly be informed by contingencies rather than individual authorship.
