Last week, ACSA joined leaders of AIA, AIAS, NAAB, NCARB, and NOMA for the Spring Alliance Meeting. As we continue to work towards building a strong field, we take pride in connecting with like-minded organizations and leaders who share our mission. During the meeting, the organization leaders shared plans for upcoming programming, K-12 engagement, and more opportunities for growth amongst architecture students, educators, and professionals. ⁠

Join us in congratulating ACSA faculty member Laura Kurgan (@kurganl) of Columbia GSAPP (@columbiagsapp) for being recognized by the 2026 National Design Awards! Presented by Cooper Hewitt, the National Design Awards celebrate excellence and leadership in design, recognizing the innovation and impact of individual designers and organizations across 10 categories.⁠
⁠
Kurgan was awarded for her work in spatial computation, data visualization, and digital cartography at the intersection of technology and social justice. From employing GPS as a design tool in the 1990s to leveraging declassified satellite imagery to map political conflicts, her projects help us to visualize systemic injustices, such as incarceration patterns and migration flow.⁠

This Women’s History Month, the ACSA Research team invites you to explore “Where Are the Women? Measuring Progress on Gender in Architecture.” ⁠
⁠
Like many professions in the United States, architecture has a long-standing history of being a male-dominated field. This research chronicles the need for greater representation of women in the discipline. However, it is important to note that this attention to representation and diversity is not the same as what is required to create an equitable future for women across the discipline. ⁠
⁠
This research is only the beginning of a longer discussion. Not only do we need to attract more women to schools of architecture, but we need to support them when they get there, and continue supporting them as they engage the profession throughout their careers.⁠
