University-Based Community Design Round Table: Navigating Change in a Shifting Landscape

1.5 AIA/CES LU

Presenters: Matthew Bernstine, Washington University in St. Louis
Michaele Pride, University of New Mexico
Ann Yoachim, Tulane University
Jordan Zignego, Montana State University

Description:
What does it mean to teach and practice community design in a moment of political and institutional instability? Community Design Centers, rooted in local partnerships, play a critical role in sustaining trust and connection between institutions and communities. Yet, amid polarization, the erosion of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and the urgent but underfunded demands of climate change, the field faces profound pressures (and terminated grants). With restrictive policies and shrinking resources, how can we remain nimble, resilient, and equity-driven? This session brings together educators and practitioners to share strategies for sustaining impactful community design centers amid rapid national and local changes.

Description:
This workshop explores how faculty can leverage their professional experiences and networks to create transformative educational experiences. Led by adjunct professors, representing perspectives from community colleges and universities, that also lead successful design and consulting practices, this session demonstrates how the convergence of academic theory and professional practice creates divergent pathways for student learning and community engagement. We will share proven strategies for integrating real-world projects, building industry partnerships, and fostering community connections within architectural curricula. Participants will develop actionable plans for creating dynamic, relevant learning opportunities that prepare students for the complexities of contemporary practice while strengthening community ties.

First Come

Description:
The Chicago Architecture Center (CAC) invites you to join this free luncheon and group discussion exploring the many shared interests and partnership opportunities that link public-facing architecture organizations and schools of architecture. Education providers like CAC can be valuable resources for spotting and engaging high school talent, as well as platforms for undergraduate, graduate, and early career professionals to reach public audiences. More recently, CAC has begun looking at issues of high school student wellness and readiness to succeed in higher education settings, as well as new ways to support the countless collegiate programs that make study trips to Chicago. What can we learn from one another?

Prior to lunch, there will be a brief gallery talk for the Princeton/Chicago Architecture Center Fellowship, a competitive fellowship for early career architects and designers. Space is limited and attendance will be based on a first come, first served basis.
