The Fowl Housing Project: A Satirical Campaign that Advocates for Deeply Affordable Housing

Annual Meeting Proceedings

Author(s): Emmanuel Osorno

In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, late-night talk show hosts and their production teams rose to the occasion to maintain their regular broadcast schedules while staying at home, granting us – the audience – a few minutes of comedic relief in a time in which stress, fear, and loss were palpable, daily occurrences.1 In addition to their derision for the government’s response to the health emergency, their satirical monologues urged us to follow social distancing and safety protocols, reminding us that the world as we knew it had changed.2 Satire, as a mechanism for critique and entertainment, evolved during this time of crisis to be one of action grounded in reality,3 becoming a tool for advocacy in a moment when the magnitude of the issue felt too gargantuan for us to solve on our own.
