Wood is a global commodity of growing importance. This paper introduces the Swedish Timber Empire, a conceptual understanding of the extent of Swedish-owned forests beyond the current geographical borders of Sweden. Since the fall of the Iron Curtain, there has been a rapidly expanding procurement by the Swedish forestry companies of forestlands in countries formerly occupied by the Soviet Union. Research conducted by the authors has discovered that12% of privately-owned forest land in Latvia now belongsto Swedish stakeholders. This paper considers the relationship between Sweden and Latvia, and in exploring these two countries the paper offers a new framework for the transnational interdependency of forests and forest industries.
