Malaria is an issue of global importance. This parasitic disease, which is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito, currently threatens 44% of the world’s population. In 2013, there were an estimated 198 million infections and over 580,000 deaths from malaria. Like many diseases, malaria is opportunistic, quickly feeding into the cycle of poverty and infecting the most vulnerable members of society who lack access to protection and care.
