Between the Autonomous & Contingent Object: Paper Proceedings

A Conceptual Space for Architecture: Singularity Through Ecological Contingency

Fall Conference Proceedings

Author(s): Michelle M. Laboy

Architecture is made in a real space and time. Its making is a contingent act, thusthe pursuit of formal autonomy signifies a natural ambition for singularity ineach creative act. The notions of a purely contingent and a purely autonomousarchitectural object were generated as extremes in the discourse to theorizeand examine the ongoing dialogue between the ideal and the real. But the idealand the real change over time, and what stands are the enduring qualities ofarchitecture that engage in constructing the physical and cultural landscape.
