108th ACSA Annual Meeting

OPEN: Reinvented Annual Meeting

Conference Notice: COVID-19

In light of the recent public health updates regarding COVID-19, the ACSA Board of Directors has decided not to hold the 108th ACSA Annual Meeting in San Diego next week. Recognizing the scholarly work that is shared throughout the conference is important and timely, we are exploring alternate options to deliver the conference content by virtual means. We regret having to make this decision, but determined we must prioritize the health and safety of our conference attendees.

Salk & University of California San Diego Tour

The Salk Institute was established in 1960 by Jonas Salk, MD, developer of the first safe and effective polio vaccine. Salk selected world-renowned architect Louis I. Kahn to design the research facility he envisioned would contribute to the betterment of humankind. The Salk Institute has a long history of innovation and excellence in biomedical science. In addition, the Salk Institute continues to be acclaimed by architecture critics as one of the world’s boldest structures. Completed in 1965 and now designated a historical site, the Institute fulfills founder Dr. Jonas Salk’s vision of a facility with open, unobstructed laboratory interiors set in a dramatic location that inspires creativity among its researchers.

The University of California San Diego campus, covering 1,200 acres along the Pacific Ocean, was started in 1960 from the consolidation of two military bases. The University buildings range from the spartan barracks of the old military installations to the high-profile Modernist showpiece of the Geisel Library tower. Landscape projects such as Library Walk have been created in an attempt to unify some of this diversity, as well as rationalize movement across the sprawling campus. Also, the site-specific sculptures of the Stuart Collection, positioned around the University by the artists themselves, lend an air of critical awareness, self-consciousness, and sophistication uncharacteristic of the campus in general.

Finding Tijuana / San Diego, Educational Tour

When embarking on a project involving a particular site, architects, landscape architects, urban designers, as well as artists, and writers, begin with visually analyzing the site. Those analyses reveal, provoke, and challenge us with unseen faces of the site, providing us with a deeper sense of the place. In this workshop, we will tour the border city Tijuana / San Diego with architects, artists and social scientists working in this region, investigating different methods for visualizing and absorbing the sense of Place.

Passport / VISA by US & Mexican government has to be prepared by each participant.

Bus & Walking Tour
$100 USD

9:00am-4:00pm

The tour will begin at Bread & Salt in San Diego, then proceed to crossing the border into Tijuana to visit Estacion Federal, Casa del Tunel, Friendship Park, and the Sanchez / Cuellar residence on the border. Marcel Sanchez, Adrianna Cuellar, Miguel Marshall, Jim Brown, Roberto D. Hernández, and Junichi Satoh will lead the tour and share their stories.
