In a survey of the literature on architectural autonomy, one quickly realizes that‘autonomy’ can mean a number of different and often contradictory things.Autonomy has been invoked to call for a rupture with history and also for itsreengagement; it has been used to argue for and against the duties of criticality;and in the name of autonomy architects have promoted and rejected thecentrality of building to the architectural project, to name a few.
